About Walrus
Walrus is a decentralized storage and data availability protocol built on the Sui blockchain, designed for large binary files with high availability and reliability across distributed storage nodes. It uses a unique economic model where users prepay for long-term data storage, and those fees are distributed over time to node operators and stakers as rewards. Rewards accrue each epoch (approximately two weeks), paid proportionally to your active stake — but only while your chosen node is part of the "Current Committee". For unstaking, there is an unbonding period of up to two full epochs (around one month) from the withdrawal request before your WAL tokens become transferable again. Current APY is approximately 0.3%, which reflects Walrus's storage-demand-driven reward model — yields are designed to grow as network storage usage scales rather than from token inflation.
How to Stake
- Set up a Sui-compatible wallet (Slush, Sui Wallet, etc.), purchase WAL from a supported exchange, and keep a small amount of SUI in the same wallet for gas fees.
- Go to the official staking dApp (stake-wal.wal.app) and connect your wallet on the Sui Mainnet.
- Choose a validator (node operator) from the "Current Committee" and enter the amount of WAL you want to stake.
- Approve the transaction — if you delegate before the midpoint of epoch e-1, rewards activate in epoch e; if you stake later, they begin in epoch e+1.
💡 Tip: Walrus has active slashing — penalties for malicious behavior or poor performance can affect delegated tokens. Commission rates vary by validator, so always check the commission, uptime, and performance history before delegating.
